Preparing for an ISO Audit: A Readiness Guide

Audit readiness is not simply arranging documents before an auditor arrives. It is about demonstrating that the management system is understood, implemented, monitored and improved within its defined scope.

Practical ways to organise evidence, people and processes before an independent management-system audit.

01

Define the context and scope

Confirm the audit scope, criteria, sites, processes and applicable standard edition. Understand the audit programme and any requirements communicated by the independent assessment body.

02

Understand relevant requirements

Review process ownership and ensure people understand their roles, relevant procedures and how their work contributes to the management system. Avoid coaching people to give scripted answers; focus on actual understanding and practice.

03

Review risks and business priorities

Check that documented information is current, controlled and accessible. Records should be genuine, traceable and consistent with how work is actually performed.

04

Check applicability and sector needs

Review internal audit results, nonconformities, corrective actions, performance monitoring, management review outputs and relevant compliance evaluations. Follow up overdue actions and assess whether corrective actions were effective.

05

Plan realistic implementation

Prepare practical access to relevant work areas, personnel and records. Make sure arrangements for safety, confidentiality, visitors and remote access are understood.

Important noteAn audit is an evidence-based independent evaluation. Do not create records retrospectively or conceal issues. Address gaps transparently and agree appropriate corrective actions. This guide is general information, not legal, regulatory or certification advice. Confirm the current applicable requirements for your organisation and jurisdiction.
